What If My People Leave?
As HR professionals you are tasked with figuring out how to keep your current employees happy, and
ultimately finding new employees when your employees decide to leave. Figuring out why employees
are leaving can be tough. People will sometimes let the real reasons slip out, but many times especially
when employees are leaving without notice or you work in an intimidating environment it’s difficult to
find out the real reasons driving turnover.
What can you control? Understanding what you can impact, and where your efforts will be the best
served can have dramatic impacts on your short-term and long-term retention. Can you impact how
much fun people have at work? Can you impact communication at work? Can you impact training and
the training experience at work?
How is turnover really impacting the Company? How is turnover impacting you and your staff? How is
turnover impacting supervisors and management? How much does your turnover cost? Do people at
all levels in the organization understand the true costs of turnover?
What is Work/Life Balance in 2022? How important is mental health to your organization?
As consultants we see companies that are basically the same size, doing similar work but certain
companies just don’t lose people as quickly as others. Why? What is the magic sauce for retention?
Does a magic sauce even exist anymore when employees will leave and go down the street for a 25 cent
raise?
I’ll be talking through some of the approaches that we see and hear in our work, and we’ll start a
discussion about what is working and not working in the market. There is no easy button for this work
but sitting in the dark and doing nothing will always get you the same result. Our attitude about the
work we do and the people we serve goes a long way in finding and keeping good people.
