Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States who received an honorable discharge, as defined in Ohio Revised Code 5901.01. Honorable discharge is required for all periods of service.
- Current Ohio driver's license (driving is considered an essential function of this position).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational, interviewing, and customer service skills.
- Experience, knowledge, and/or training in administration and recordkeeping.
- Typing and keyboarding skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to successfully complete and maintain required accreditation through the Ohio Department of Veterans Services and National Association of County Veterans Service Officers.
- Must successfully pass required background investigation.
Hours: Full-Time, 35 hours per week Pay Rate: $30.21 per hour
The selected candidate may be assigned to either the Commission's main office or the Pataskala satellite office. The assigned work location may change based on the operational needs of the Commission, and the employee must be willing to work full-time at either location. Pataskala’s satellite office is located at 310 Township Road Pataskala, OH 43062.
Duties: Provide professional advocacy and assistance to veterans, dependents, and survivors seeking federal, state, and local veterans’ benefits, including but not limited to:
- Interview veterans and eligible dependents to determine eligibility for VA and state benefits.
- Prepare, develop, submit, and monitor VA disability compensation, pension, survivor, education, health care, and other benefit claims.
- Review VA decisions and prepare appeals when appropriate.
- Conduct research and obtain military, medical, and other supporting documentation necessary to develop claims.
- Maintain accurate electronic client records using eVetAssist and other required software systems.
- Conduct home visits, nursing home visits, and outreach to assist veterans unable to travel to the office.
- Answer telephones, respond to client inquiries, and provide referrals to community agencies and resources.
- Complete financial assistance applications when appropriate under Commission guidelines.
- Maintain monthly activity reports and required documentation.
- Attend required accreditation training and continuing education to maintain certification.
- Participate in veterans' events, outreach activities, and public education programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the daily operations of the Veterans Service Commission.
The Veterans Service Officer must maintain a pleasant, courteous, professional, and compassionate demeanor while protecting confidential client information and representing the Licking County Veterans Service Commission in a positive manner.
